Man bets and loses $21,000 on baseball game decided by a flock of seagulls

Deadspin---Betting on a mid-June AL Central baseball game seems like a brilliant path to financial freedom, but believe it or not, there are dangers. Like a flock of birds attacking Coco Crisp and costing you a $38,000 payday.

Aaron Smith, of (I assume) Las Vegas, put down two bets totaling $21,750 on last Thursday's matchup between the Royals and Indians, What would possess someone to do such a thing? Well, Zack Greinke was pitching and that guy like ... never loses.

If you don't know what happened, here is the video. The game went into extra innings and was decided when a ball took a bad bounce off a seagull. This is why you shouldn't bet on baseball.

EDIT:MLB will probably pull this video any second.

Crazy sports week

Well it has been a busy sports week. Lets recap.

The Yankees continue to prove that they are pathetic, but getting swept by the Red Sox again. During that ass kicking they stole their fans money. The Yankees are now so desperate they are considering reburying Big Papi's shirt underneath the stadium.

Joba Chamberlin's (who strikes a similar resemblance to Brian Peppers) mom was arrested this week, for selling crystal meth. You can tell that Joba gets his good looks from his mom
But the Yankees should be righting there ship anytime now. Their fearless leader A-Rod, should be back in the lineup this weekend, after a rub down.

Brett Farve thought about coming back to football. Does anybody actually care? He is a washed up bum, that fucked up the Patriots playoff hopes last year because he threw 87 interceptions in the last three games.
Manny got suspend for 50 games for not being able to get a boner. Maybe he should try guys.
And in non sports news Drew Peterson finally got arrested. That only took four wives.

Yankees are pathetic

The Yankees just got swept by the Sox's, and now the Sox have won something like their 83 straight game. The Yankees are a pathetic, almost as pathetic as this dudes haircut that I spotted when I was watching the Sox in Anaheim earlier in the year.

Most Yankees fans have the same come back when they are told they how pathetic their team is, and that is to mumble something like we won 26 world championships. Bla! Most of those were won before we even had 50 states. The New York Yankees are baseball version of the Oakland Raiders, but gayier.
I am a better GM than Brian Cashman. And I have never been a GM, yet. So lets recap.

Starting yesterday the Yanks quietly released pitcher Humberto Sanchez yesterday. Sanchez, you will remember, was supposed to be the "steal" of the Gary Sheffield deal. Brian Cashman, that brilliant judge of pitching talent (my tongue is planted firmly in my cheek on that one), dealt Sheff for three young arms-- Sanchez, Anthony Claggett and Kevin Whelan. Sanchez's "career" with the Yanks encompassed two games and two innings (allowing one earned run) in 2008. Claggett had a "spectacular" Major League debut in the Yanks' 22-4 debacle at the hands of the Cleveland Indians last week, allowing nine hits (including two home runs) and eight earned runs in 1.2 innings for a lifetime ERA of 43.20 before being sent right back down to the minor the next day in true Yankee fashion. Whelan, meanwhile, has yet to make his ML debut. So we've still got that to look forward to.

He "outfoxed" the Red Sox to land the notoriously gutless Jose Contreras in 2003.
In 2004, Curt Schilling told the D-backs that he would accept a trade to only one of two teams-- the Philadelphia Phillies or the New York Yankees. But while the Yanks played it cool, Theo Epstein wined and dined Schilling and his wife and sold him on coming to Boston. That was also the year the Yanks became so enamored with signing Gary Sheffield-- like they needed another bat in that line-up!-- that they offended Andy Pettite to the point that Andy took his talented left arm (and a pal named Clemens) to Houston, where the duo drove the Astros to their first ever World Series appearance a year later. Cashman's response to these developments? He brought in an over-the-hill Kevin Brown and assembled a pitching staff devoid of a single left-handed starter, playing perfectly into the hands of the Red Sox, who responded by winning their first World Series championship since 1918. A year later, the Yanks filled their need for a lefthander by bringing in the over-the-hill Randy Johnson. Then in 2007, instead of overbidding for Dice-K Matzusaka-- as they had for Contreras and any number of other lesser pitchers in the past (Jaret Wright, Carl Pavano, Steve Kasay, LaTroy Hawkins, Kyle Farnsworth, etc)-- they allowed the Red Sox to sign him. Then, in a classic knee-jerk reaction to compensate for losing the bidding war to the Sox, Cashman signed the pathetically mediocre Kei Igawa (2-4 and a symbolically appropriate 6.66 ERA in two seasons in pinstripes) rather than sign free agent Ted Lilly, who was dying to return to the Yanks.

Ah, but it gets better. In 2008, the Minnesota Twins were faced with the decision to deal ace lefty Johann Santana or lose him to free agency. The Yanks were interested, but not, according to Cashman, at the expense of the team's top two pitching prospects-- Philip Hughes and Ian Kennedy. So the Mets gladly stepped in and dealt for Santana, who proceeded to go 16-7 with a 2.53 ERA for the Mets, single-handedly keeping the Mets in the pennant race to the very last day of the season. And Hughes and Kennedy?? They combined to go 0-8 (they were both 0-4) with a putrid 7.45 ERA. They are both currently back in the minors and neither has received a call-up despite the fact that the team is carrying 13 pitchers and calling up the likes of Claggett and David Robertson in recent weeks.

In Tom Verducci's terrific book "The Yankee Years", he makes this observation on page 461:

"In the 13 drafts in between taking Andy Pettite in 1990 and Phil Hughes in 2004, the Yankees drafted 397 pitchers. Not one of them made a significant contribution to the Yankees' rotation. Not one. No sleeper pick came through. No top pick panned out. No middle-round pick developed that one pitch or made that key adjustment to be a good starting pitcher for the Yankees. The odds were staggering that the Yankees could not hit on somebody, even by dumb luck, but that's what happened. With more resources to plow into scouting and development than every other franchise, the Yankees went 0-for-397 over more than a decade of pitching bankruptcy."

And now it appears as though Cashman & Company have messed up the one truly great pitching prospect that they developed in nearly 20 years-- Joba Chamberlain-- by trying to turn him into a starter instead of letting him be baseball's best set-up man and their future closer. Imagine if the Red Sox had decided to go with their initial inclination to turn Papelbon into a starter instead of keeping him in the bullpen?

The New York press helped to run Joe Torre out of town, blaming him for the Yankees failures since 2001. But the real culprit still draws a paycheck from the Yanks: Cashman. How is it that he has escaped the "credit" that is due him for all of these bad decisions?

The only thing keeping the Yankees from being the worst team in baseball is money. They can afford to keep cutting bait. In the NFL teams can't do that because of the salary cap. So that is why the Raiders will continue to suck. Oh, and nice draft Raiders.

Why does God and MLB hate the Red Sox

Beckett suspended for 6 games by MLB

Boston.com---Boston pitcher Josh Beckett has been suspended for six games and fined by Major League Baseball, which determined he intentionally threw a pitch near the head of the Los Angeles Angels' Bobby Abreu last week.

Beckett also was cited for "aggressive actions" after the pitch that led to the benches clearing Sunday, according to Bob Watson, vice president for discipline in the commissioner's office.

If Beckett appeals, any penalties would be delayed until after a hearing.

Angels hitting coach Mickey Hatcher was suspended for one game and fined, and he was to serve the penalty Tuesday night. In addition, Watson fined Angels manager Mike Scioscia and players Torii Hunter and Justin Speier

The Sox are 2-5, and are playing as well as my college softball team that use to determine the batting order by the drunkest person. And then MLB suspense Josh Beckett for throwing over Bobby Abreu. If anyone should get suspended it should be the dumb ass umpire that called for time in the middle of a pitching wind up. Throwing a baseball is the most violent action one can preform on their body, and this douchebag umpire tried to injury Josh Beckett by making him stop in the middle of a delivery. Watch the video, he is in the middle of a pitch.

You can take any pitcher in baseball and in the middle of their windup start jumping and waving your hands from where the umpire was standing and I am sure the same thing will happen. If Josh Beckett wanted to hit Bobby Abredouche in the head, I'm sure he would knock his fucking eye out.

Big Papi likes to keep porn around

How long is too long to keep old porn around? I was just debating that in my head. I have some porn that I haven't watched in years, but yet I still have it for some reason. It is like we think of porn like treasury bonds, that somehow the longer you hold on to them the more value they have. But this is not the case, I think I will throw away my old pornos when I go home today.

Which brings me to my point. So my Red Sox insider was telling me about the improvements at Fenway this year. I guess the big construction project this off season is adding a foot and a half more space in the underneath console. Whoop dee doo! But the person also mentioned to me that in David Ortiz's locker there is just a stack of porn videos. Most are unlabeled but the others are all long the lines of Big Black Butts. Obviously Big Papi has no shame in just leaving this stuff in his locker over winter, but how often does this shit gets watched during the season? Does him and other Red Sox just sit around prior to games and have a circle jerk? I don't know? But for some reason I can just picture Dice-K in the back ground of all this with just a stupid smile on his face. Personally I think porn only have a lifespan of about 3 watches, and then they just take up space. Maybe this is where Big Papi stores his old stash when he doesn't want his wife to see them. But anyways, I thought this was weird.

Nothing says St. Patricks Day like wearing a Lakers shirt

Is this the worst idea in the history of marketing? You can buy the shirt for $19.99 (marked down from 25.99) and the hat for 15.99 (originally 19.99) from the NBA store. What a better way to show your love for the Lakers than to wear Celtics green with a shamrock on the sleeve.
I can only imagine that the only people that bought this shirt was Celtics fans that thought it was funny.

The people that came up with this idea are probably the same people that own the parking garage outside the Staples Center. Which if you don't know is called Shamrock Parking.

Monday Morning Patriots Quarterbacking

So the Pats traded Matt Cassel over the weekend, and threw in Mike Varbel as well. Some like myself were asking why didn't they more? Its apparent that they just wanted the cap space.

Boston.com---The Saturday trade that shipped Cassel and Vrabel to Kansas City for a second-round pick (No. 34 overall) allowed the Patriots to clear Cassel's $14.65 million franchise tag fee off the books and $3.3 million of Vrabel's scheduled $4.3 million cap hit in 2009.Lending further credence to the idea that the trade was done in part with an eye toward clearing cap space is the fact that the Lions offered the first pick of the second round (No. 33 overall) straight up for Cassel, according to an NFL source.
I guess I agree with Bilichick on this one. Mike Varbel needed to go. He was bad for the last season and a half. He just couldn't cover tight ends or running backs out of the back field, and he just wasn't getting the pressure on the quarterback that we were use to be seeing. So I agree he was just taking up valuable cap room.

Now what I don't understand is this.
The Patriots, who were believed to have entered yesterday with somewhere in the neighborhood of $15-$16 million in cap room, wasted no time spending some of that money, re-signing safety James Sanders, arguably the team's highest-profile free agent once Cassel was franchised.

James Sanders, the highest profile free agent? Did I read this right. The human turnstile. The guy that I says plays wearing lawn spikes. The reincarnation of Lawyer Malloy (old version). If that is our big resigning with the cap space, then I think Bill may be losing it. How about resigning Vince Wilfolk. That will get my panties in a bunch.

Good luck to Cassel, come back after you marry a Brazilian supermodel.

Bout Freaking Time

Report: QB/QT Tom Brady, supermodel Gisele Bundchen tie the knot in intimate L.A. ceremony

Boston Hearld---New England Patriots [team stats] superstud Tom Brady [stats] - the region’s most eligible bachelor - reportedly tied the knot last night with his supermodel galpal, Gisele Bundchen, in a romantic twilight wedding in California.

US Weekly magazine reported on its Web site that the pigskin prince and his Brazilian bombshell traded “I do’s” in a small Catholic ceremony in St. Monica’s Church in Santa Monica. The “very small and intimate” gathering consisted mostly of immediate family, including Brady’s parents, Tom Sr. and Gaylen, and 2-year-old son, Jack, by ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan .

OK, great the Golden Boy and the supermodel finally get married. Hopefully he can get his honeymoon over quick, and get back to rehabbing his knee. Football free agency begins today, and Cassel needs to get trade so that we can rebuild our dynasty. So enjoy the weekend with your new beautiful bride, and be back in the gym by Monday.

Yankees harpoon CC Fatbastardia

LAS VEGAS – CC Sabathia is not going to play on the West Coast. He is not going to play in the National League. CC Sabathia is going to be a Yankee, The Post has learned exclusively. After three straight days of face-to-face meetings between GM Brian Cashman and Sabathia, the big lefty decided he wants to spend the next six years of his career as a Yankee. The decision came late last night after Cashman flew to see Sabathia at his home in San Francisco. By the time the meeting was concluded, Sabathia had informed the Yankees that he had made his decision to call New York his baseball home, the Post has learned.

Like there was any doubt he was going to sign there. The Yankees were throwing so much more money at him than any other team. The Players Associate was putting pressure on him to take the deal because it would have screwed other players of larger contracts.

This is a typical Yankee signing. Sign a guy coming off the best years of his career, and only have him productive for maybe two seasons, then complain about the guy for the remaining four years when he sucks.

He is a fat man who has thrown the most innings in the last two seasons. This is a recipe for disaster. Fat people need to take it easy or they will break down. Probably by year three of the contract. My guess is that a knee will go, because of all the weight they have to hold up.

CC should as fit in perfectly with A Rod in the postseason too. They can compete on who can get booed more. CC has a career 7.92 ERA in the postseason. He loves dominating the crappy teams, but he is not a clutch player.

2009 season prediction with the Yanks: 17-11 3.82 ERA 210 innings 189k's. Not bad, but this will be his best season with the Yanks.

Friday's Failure of the day

This happened last week in the Marshall vs Houston football game. When the QB over throws the endzone, don't run and catch it. Ouch!

Didn't see this coming

As I was watching the Celtics ring ceremony last night, I was shocked to see Paul Pierce crying. I think I had the same look on my face as the guy standing behind him.

I talked about this crying incident over with my roommate and we both couldn't remember a athlete crying when they received their ring. There has been plenty of crying athletes when they win a championship, but I think this is the first at a ring ceremony.

I thought it was a little wussy. Hey, they still won the game and Pierce played great!

NESN replaces Hazel Mae with giant cranium man

Boston Herald--After a nationwide search, NESN has finally found a replacement for “SportsDesk” vixen Hazel Mae - and it’s a dude!

Cole Wright, sports director of WVLA, the NBC affiliate in Baton Rouge, La., and a former minor-league pitcher, will take over for the departed Hazel next month.

Wright will anchor “SportsDesk” and host the station’s sports news programming.

“Cole will be a great addition to our sports news team,” said NESN programming cheese Joel Feld.

Wright, who played minor league baseball in the Frontier League for the Rockford RiverHawks, previously worked as an assistant sports director and weekend sports anchor for KETK in Tyler, Texas, and KLST in San Angelo, Texas.

He replaces Mae, who will start work as the face of the new MLB Network when it debuts in January.

So NESN has been on a roll with hiring hot chicks. The Heidi Watney signing might been the best addition to any TV, news, or sporting event all year. But they seriously dropped the ball on this one. I was never a big Hazel Mae fan, but from going to this.

To this, is a major drop off.The only thing I can think of is that with the economy so bad NESN needs to sell advertising space on his forehead.

Hey its Friday!

Thank freaking god its Friday. The man has been keeping down all week. But fuck the man I leaving work early today and taking Monday off.

Somehow the Red Sox survived to play another day. I had them completely dead in the water the other day. But one thing about the Red Sox is that they are never boring.

I can't wait to do nothing.

The Red Sox suck

There done. Even though they came back down 3-1 last year and down 3-0 games back in 2004, they are done. Stick a fork in them. They just have too many holes to fill. Props to Tampa, because they will probably win the World Series.

This is what it felt like watching the first inning.

But on the bright side at least the Yankees keep losing. Tampa's oldest pitcher is 26 years old, they have a solid core of young players that will be competitive for many years to come. As long as they keep some of them.

The Red Sox have plenty of young pitching as well, and they are turning out one home grown positional player each year. They will be around the top of baseball for the next couple years.

While the Yankees have one young good player, and that is Joba Chamberlain. And its appears he will break down as a starter. They really don't have too much on the farm, and they will have to try and buy another championship. Once again filling their roster with old aging players that will become overpriced in two years.

I'm tried of the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry. Lets bring on the Tampa/Sox rivalry for the next 10 years.

There are baseball gods

Thank freaking god the Sox game did not go extra innings last night. I was at the game and was freezing. So how I lost my gloves by the third inning, and I ate a hot dog that was cooked inside a vending machine that tasted like cardboard. This was the grosses thing I have ever ate and was getting me sick.

If the baseball gods continue to do their work they will have a Dodgers/Sox series. Manny Ramirez will need to come back to Fenway so that he can be booed.

I was the biggest Manny supported out there. But it was obvious that he quit on his teammates. He was sabotaging the Red Sox so that he could get a trade out of Boston. He has had nothing nice to say about the Red Sox fans who idolized him for the last 8 years. He is dead to me.

The Dodgers/Sox series would also be another Boston vs LA battle, just like how the NBA finals was. The only negative aspect will be the 10 o'clock starts on the West Coast. Baseball hates people on the East coast. They no that we aren't fair weather fans and will stay up to watch the games. Unlike the West Coast baseball ball fans who typically leave by the 7th inning.

But I am not looking to far ahead. The Rays are going to be tough. They are playing great baseball for the last couple months. This is probably going to come down to 7 games, but at least these games are going to be on the East Coast.

And you thought the Patriots had Quarterback problems

Titans asked police to help find QB Young
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Vince Young is awaiting an MRI exam on his sprained left knee Tuesday, hours after the Tennessee Titans sought police help in finding the quarterback the team described as “emotionally down.”

Young left his home around 7 Monday night without a phone, prompting the Titans to call Nashville police for help. The team got a message to Young through a friend, and the quarterback met with coach Jeff Fisher and police at team headquarters around 11:30 p.m. Police spokesman Don Aaron said Young drove himself home about 30 minutes later.

The story first was reported by WKRN-TV.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!
At least we know where Brady is, getting extra loving from his supermodel girlfriend. Has anyone looked in a gay club, he is probably dancing with a bunch of dudes shirtless again.

Black Sunday

So it looks like Brady is done for the year. I'm not holding my breath and waiting for the MRI results later today, I'll be more than happy to have egg on my face. So now the next question, what now?

We have seen this before.

But I don't think there is another Tom Brady walking through that door. What about Matt Cassel? He is not the answer. He peppers the hands of opponents defenders too many times a game to be reliable. Maybe it is Chris Simms? Talk of bringing him in was rumored all during the pre-season, and now it may become a reality.

But even if Simms signs today, it will be a few weeks before he is ready to play. I think its time to banish the 5 wides, and play a little smash mouth football. Laurence Maroney and Sammy Morris are going to be much more of a focus. We have three pro bowlers offensive lineman, I think its time we run behind them. If anything we relied too much on the passing attack last year. Once the weather went to shit, we couldn't throw they ball. Even Brady couldn't throw in 35 mph winds.

Yesterday I thought the season was over. Well at least for my fantasy team it is, since Brady was my first round pick. But I think there is still enough talent on this team to win. If anything they are going to start winning dirty. Like how they use to win games. During the Superbowl years, they weren't blowing teams out. They won by 4,5,6 points. That is how they are going to need to do it again.

But one concern I have more than who is taking the snaps is their safety play. Its embarrassing. Disgusting is being nice to describe it. Rodney Harrison looks really old, and can't jump anymore. How many balls are he going to be out jumped for? He might as well just tackle the receiver and take the penalty. James Sanders looks like he is wearing lawn spikes out there. Why is this guy still starting?

The Jets next week is going to be tougher than I thought it was going to be. But I haven't lost faith yet, we still have the best coach in football.
